How to book a hotel in Vietnam at a good rate: direct or app
How to book a hotel in Vietnam at a good rate: compare final prices, booking direct or via an app, what to ask, cancellation terms and safe deposits.
· 3 min read · bookings.vn
Booking a hotel at a good rate is not about chasing the lowest number on a screen. It is about knowing the final price you will pay, the cancellation terms and where your deposit is going. This guide compares booking direct with booking through an app, lists the questions to ask when you call a hotel in Vietnam and shares tips for getting the room you want, especially around public holidays and Tet.
Direct or through an app: a quick comparison
| Booking direct with the hotel | Booking through an app or site | |
|---|---|---|
| Price | Sometimes negotiable, especially for long stays or weekdays | Easy to compare, often with discount codes |
| Special requests | Easy to ask for a window, a high floor or an extra bed | Usually a note the hotel meets if it can |
| Cancelling or changing | The hotel's own policy | Depends on the rate type you chose in the app |
| Risk | You must be sure you are talking to the real hotel | Check whether the price includes taxes and fees |
Neither is always cheaper. A smart approach is to check app prices as a benchmark, then call the hotel and ask for its rate on your dates. Phone numbers are on our hotel finder.
Compare the final price
The price on screen may exclude tax, service charge or breakfast. When you compare options, bring them all to one figure:
- Is the nightly rate inclusive of tax and fees?
- Is breakfast included, and for how many people?
- Weekend, holiday, extra bed or child surcharges.
- Parking or airport transfer charges if you need them.
Six questions to ask when you call
- Which room types are available on your nights?
- Does the room have a window, and does it face the street or the back?
- Check-in and check-out times; is early check-in or late check-out possible?
- How much is the deposit, and whose name is on the receiving account?
- What does it cost to cancel or change dates?
- Which documents do foreign guests need at check-in?
Note the name of the person you spoke to and ask for a booking confirmation by message or email.
Booking in peak season: holidays, Tet and summer
- Book early: beach and mountain destinations often fill up on long weekends.
- Choose a refundable rate if your plans are not fixed, even if it costs a little more.
- Be wary of surprise bargains on social media at peak times, when fake hotel pages are most common. See hotel booking scams.
- Look at neighbouring wards: when the centre is full, places a few kilometres away are often cheaper and quieter.
Paying a deposit safely
Transfer money only into an account in the name of the hotel or its operating company, never into an unfamiliar personal account. Before paying, call the property's published phone number to confirm. Keep screenshots of the confirmation, the transfer receipt and your messages until you check out.
Long stays and group bookings
If you plan to stay a week or more, or are booking several rooms for a family or group, always ask for a long-stay or group rate. Many smaller hotels and homestays will offer a better price, free breakfast or a late check-out when the booking is worth more to them. Ask for the agreed rate, the number of rooms and the deposit terms to be confirmed in writing.
Before you travel
- Reconfirm the booking a day or two beforehand.
- Save the hotel's address and phone number offline on your phone.
- Bring ID or your passport for the guest registration at check-in.
- Pack light and smart: see what size suitcase to buy and suitcases.
If the room is not what you booked
Calmly show your confirmation and ask for the room type you booked or a discount. If you booked through an app, contact its support team on the spot and photograph the room as evidence. One small habit makes the next trip easier: keep a list of places you enjoyed along with their phone numbers, so next time you can simply call them direct.
